Acid Reflux (GERD- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) or Acidity/Dyspepsia (Amlapitta)
All of us have suffered from acidity at some point in our lives. Either it is that extra sweet dish at a family function or that spicy food during tea break or as snacks. Whatever the reason may be, acidity can be quite an uncomfortable experience, and sometimes we are left with no option but to reach out for that bottle of antacid. But, do you know that there are alternative, natural remedies that work just as well and don’t leave you with the ill-effects of too much medication?
Excess production of acid from the stomach is called as Amlapitta in Ayurveda.
Remedies and tips
a) Amla: Take 1 Teaspoon full of Amla powder with water before meals. Amla is good pittashaamak (acid pacifying property) relieves acidity.
b) Cold milk: A glassful of cold mild without fat (toned) is very useful in relieving hyperacidity problem almost immediately.
c) Buttermilk: Drink 100-200 ml of fresh buttermilk without any salt or spices added, is very useful in relieving hyperacidity.
d) Sweet dishes: A piece of Petha sweet (Fruit of Bennincasa hispida processed in sugar) or white sponge rasgulla (Chhena sweet) to be taken empty stomach in morning keeps the acidity away.
e) Baking soda: Dissolve ½ teaspoonful of baking soda in 1 glass of water and drink. It pacifies acidity of all kind.
f) Churna/powder of Jeerak (cumin seeds), Dhanyak (Coriander) and Saunf (Fennel) take all in equal part mix them well and put in a container. Use 3-5 gram powder with lukewarm water during Acidity.
g) Take 3-5 gram powder of Mulethi (Glycyrrhiza glabra) with lukewarm water during acidity.
Fennel has carminative properties that aid digestion and help relieve stomach gas.
- Simply chew some fennel seeds after eating a heavy or spicy meal.
- You can also steep one or two teaspoons of fennel seeds in a cup of hot water. Strain and drink it a few times a day.
